How my market access internship opportunity helped me develop my individual skillset

It was a pleasure to welcome Jacob Sanderson to the team and we hope this update gives an insight for others who are thinking about the benefits of working as a market access intern.

“My internship has given me an invaluable insight into the world of market access, pricing, and reimbursement, and helped me develop my individual skillset,” says Jacob Sanderson of his experience as a Market Access Intern at PRMA Consulting.

I currently study International Management at the University of Manchester and have a keen interest in the pharmaceutical and biotechnological industries, which led me to pursue an opportunity to work as a Market Access Intern for PRMA Consulting.

What is market access?

Pharmaceutical and biotechnology manufacturers need effective market access strategies that get them the best reimbursement possible for their asset while keeping those assets affordable for payers, so that patients have access to new, effective therapies as soon as possible.

A warm welcome and a great introduction to market access

On my first day, I received a warm welcome from my buddy and new colleagues. I was introduced to some of the market access projects I would be supporting and taken through a great induction with training materials from the company’s online library to strengthen my understanding of market access, pricing, and reimbursement.

As an intern, I was exposed to a broad range of market access projects and expert teams

During my six-week internship, I took ownership of work, developed my research, planning, and presentation skills, and collaborated with colleagues across a broad range of projects, including:

  • Developing target access profiles and treatment landscape assessments for three subtypes of Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma

I worked alongside a Project Manager to develop a project plan and budget, prepared a slide deck for the external client kick-off, and researched current clinical guidelines to input into the situation analyses being prepared for the client.
  • Managing information in the PRMA Healthcheck® digital application

In another project, I was responsible for migrating information to the PRMA Healthcheck® digital application. This broadened my appreciation of the challenges faced in market access and the innovative methodologies used by PRMA Consulting to support their clients.
  • Exploring the efficacy of Time to Second Objective Disease Progression (PFS2) in HTA submissions

I researched analog products where PFS2 had been used in health technology assessment (HTA) submissions to guide the research taking place for situation analyses. Additionally, I prepared a kick-off presentation and project timeline.
  • Bolstering client partnerships

At the request of an Associate Director, I researched and presented an overview of a potential client’s assets, pipeline development, and focus areas. I received positive feedback from the client development team, so it was a proud moment for me!

The range of projects and expert teams that I was exposed to helped me develop a deeper understanding of PRMA Consulting’s culture and valuescapabilities, and methodologies. I quickly found synergies in my learnings across the projects which enabled me to increase my efficiency and contribution.

Supportive and collaborative remote working during my internship helped me to develop my individual skillset

Before joining PRMA Consulting, I was concerned that working remotely during my internship may hinder my ability to experience the company culture.

I needn’t have worried. The supportive and collaborative remote-working environment fostered by the project leads and team members, as well as the ownership given to me to complete complex project work, meant I was able to develop my individual skillset whilst contributing to the project.

My internship has given me an invaluable insight into the world of market access, pricing, and reimbursement, and the welcoming nature of colleagues at all levels meant I felt supported and valued throughout. As I embrace my next challenge, studying abroad in the Netherlands, I feel prepared and excited to continue my pursuits within the world of market access consulting.
